Two Bladen County girls – Kyra Gensel and Abigail Madden – have played key roles in Harrells Christian Academy’s 6-2 start to their softball season.

Madden, a freshman catcher, is batting a sizzling .480 with 10 runs scored and 7 runs batted in. She leads the team in steals (10) and has a trio of 3-hit games.

“Abigail has played a key role for us as lead-off batter and catcher, “ said Harrells Christian Coach Will Rumbold. “She is very much a table-setter for us and our success starts with her.”

Gensel has just moved from third base to centerfield for the Lady Crusaders. The versatile senior has scored 6 runs, driven in 3 and hammered 2 doubles and 2 triples. She has also stolen 5 bases.

“Kyra’s leadership is going to be crucial during our stretch run over the next 3 weeks,” said Coach Rumbold. “She is more or less a coach to our outfield. I look for her bat to get stronger over the course of the season and provide us more opportunities to score as well as drive in runs.”

Harrells won their only Coastal Rivers Conference game before the Easter Break and will travel to Kinston Wednesday for a 4 p.m. conference game at Arendell Parrott Academy.
