HOPE MILLS – Seniors Alexus Mitchell and Maya McDonald combined for 25 points Monday night to lead East Bladen to a 48-25 non-conference girls basketball victory over Gray’s Creek.

Mitchell sparked the Lady Eagle attack with 15 points, 4 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. McDonald filled the stat sheet with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Junior Maegan Burney finished with 8 points and 4 steals.

Junior Karli Priest drilled in a pair of 3-balls for 6 points and had 2 steals for the Lady Eagles. Junior center AnnaGrey Heustess blocked 5 shots and grabbed 4 rebounds. Freshman Iveonna Ward dished out 4 assists and had a team-high 5 steals. Freshman Laila Smith netted 5 points.

Mitchell popped in 2 baskets and a free throw to start the game, and Burney threw in a basket for a 7-0 Lady Eagle lead at the quarter break. McDonald tossed in 2 baskets and a foul shot in the 2nd quarter, and Ward and Laila Smith added baskets to grow the East halftime lead to 16-7.

Priest and Mitchell bombed in 3-point shots in the 3rd quarter, and Mitchell, McDonald, Burney and Laila Smith pumped in a basket each to double the lead at 30-15.

Mitchell and Priest fired in 3-balls in the final period, Burney flipped in a pair of baskets, and Heustess, Mitchell and McDonald netted a basket each. Laila Smith and McDonald sank free throws as the final margin swelled to 23 points.

Ava Sterling led the Lady Bears with 8 points, and Danejah Purdie followed with 6 points.

Coach Patty Evers’ Lady Eagles remained unbeaten at 6-0 and will travel to Whiteville Friday night.
