TABOR CITY – East Bladen rolled to leads of 24-2 and 52-8 at halftime then cruised to a 64-16 running clock victory over South Columbus Monday night in their non-conference girls’ basketball season opener.

Senior Alexus Mitchell and freshman Laila Smith sparked the 24-2 1st quarter spurt. Mitchell tossed in a trio of free throws and 2 baskets, and Laila Smith threw in a trio of baskets in the period. Freshman Iveonna Ward sank 2 foul shots and a field goal.

Laila Smith lit up the scoreboard with 8 more points in the 2nd period. Mitchell netted a trio of free throws and 2 more baskets. Junior Maegan Burney fired in a trio of baskets and a free throw as the lead grew to 52-8.

The Lady Eagle defense rode their defense to victory as they racked up 26 steals in the game. Laila Smith topped the East scoring with 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Mitchell finished with 14 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Burney followed with 9 points and 2 steals.

Ward tallied 7 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Senior Maya McDonald contributed 6 assists, 5 points and 6 steals to the Lady Eagle attack. Junior Karli Priest had 3 steals. Sophomore Zoe Smith chipped in with 3 assists and 3 steals, and freshman Martha Simmons collected 4 steals. Junior AnnaGrey Heustess added 4 points.

Coach Patty Evers’ Lady Eagles will host Wallace-Rose Hill Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
