FAIRMONT – Amyrikal Vaught pumped in 8 of her game-high 15 points as Fairmont grabbed an early 12-5 lead en route to a 45-33 Southeastern Conference girls’ basketball victory over West Bladen Friday night. LaKayla Chavis and former West Bladen player Haley George added 9 points each for the Lady Tornadoes.
Sophomore Brookee Singletary threw in a basket and 3 free throws to keep the Lady Knights within 19-10 at halftime. Junior Makayla Wright sank a basket and a free throw for West in the 1st half.
Sophomore Kiera Lewis drilled in a 3-point shot with 5:58 left in the 3rd period, and Singletary cashed in a free throw to pull West Bladen to within 21-14. Fairmont answered with lay-ups by George and Niah Smith, but Wright flipped in a runner and banked in a 15-footer to keep the Lady Knights within 28-18.
Fairmont led 34-18 at the quarter break and that lead grew to 41-21, before Lewis buried a 3-point shot, and Wright drove for a pair of lay-ups. Wright made a free throw then sent a feed to Lewis for a lay-up. Junior Lainey Autry popped in a follow shot, and Singletary converted 2 foul shots in the period.
Wright topped the West Bladen scoring list with 12 points. Lewis finished with 11 points, and Singletary followed with 8 points.
The Lady Knights, now 7-4 overall and 0-2 in SAC-7 play, will travel to Red Springs Monday night.
