DUNN — Junior Kara Beth Benton poured in 22 points and her Midway Lady Raiders held off a late West Bladen rally to claim a 48-40 Southeastern Athletic Conference girls’ basketball victory Friday night.
West Bladen trimmed a 29-15 Midway halftime lead to 3 points in the final period, but Benton tossed in 3 baskets and the Lady Raiders made 5 of 10 free throws to hold on for the win.
Benton bombed in four 3-point shots and scored 16 points to spark Midway to a 29-15 halftime lead. Junior Alina Chavez powered in 2 baskets and a free throw for West. Junior Holland Davis fired in a 3-point shot and another basket. Seniors Mallory Bryan and Kiera Lewis added baskets, and Bryan sank a free throw.
Sophomore Kali Allen rallied the Lady Knights in the 3rd quarter with a pair of 3-point shots. Lewis attacked the rim for 3 baskets and a free throw as West closed the gap to 37-28.
Chavez sank 2 free throws and a basket for West in the final period. Bryan cashed in all 4 of her free throw attempts, Allen buried another 3-ball, and Lewis netted a free throw.
Lewis, Allen and Chavez shared scoring honors for West with 9 points each. Bryan followed with 7 points, and Davis finished with 6 points.
“We can’t string together 4 quarters,” said Lady Knight Coach Brian McCleney. “This is the second game in a row that we have played great in the 2nd half.”
West Bladen, now 0-2 in the SAC and 4-7 overall, will host St. Pauls Tuesday night.
