BLADENBORO – West Bladen’s Lady Knights raced to leads of 14-2 and 22-4 en route to a 46-18 non-conference girls’ basketball victory over Union Monday.
Sophomore Brookee Singletary spun to the basket for a lay-up, banged in a follow shot and sank 2 free throws for an early 6-0 West lead. Junior Rylee Chadwick banked in a follow and tossed in 2 foul shots, and junior Makayla Wright threw in a rebound basket then turned a steal into a lay-up and a 14-2 lead at the quarter break.
Wright drove for a lay-up then popped in a follow to begin the 2nd period. Chadwick nailed a 14-footer then converted a long rebound into a lay-up and a 22-6 halftime lead.
“Overall our first five played well,” said Lady Knight Coach Brian McCleney. “Makayla did a good job on their girl who was averaging 34 points per game, and our defensive rotations helped produce some easy transition baskets.”
Union sophomore Ariyona Spearman who had scored 101 points in her first 3 games was held to just 13 points by the Lady Knights.
Chadwick flipped in a short jumper to start the 2nd half then dropped in a lay-up off of a Wright assist. Sophomore Megan Pait and Singletary hit free throws, and Singletary and junior Lainey Autry drove for lay-ups. Freshman Alina Chavez powered in a couple of follow shots to stretch the lead to 36-15.
Junior Azillyah McDonald sent a pass to sophomore Kiera Lewis for a lay-up that began the final period. McDonald dashed end-to-end for a lay-up, Lewis drove for a pair of lay-ups, and Autry sprinted for another lay-up.
“Our second group played well and got some good experience and playing time,” said McCleney.
Chadwick led the West scoring with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Singletary just missed a double-double with 9 points and 9 rebounds, and Wright finished with 8 points and 6 rebounds. Lewis tallied 6 points.
The Lady Knights improved to 6-2 and will host South Columbus Tuesday at 6 p.m.
