BLADENBORO – For 3 days this week, the gyms at West Bladen resounded repeatedly with the mantra of Knight basketball coach Travis Pait, “It’s a Great Day! … To Be a Knight!!
One hundred campers were put through ball-handling, passing, dribbling, rebounding and shooting drills at Lil Knights Basketball Camp under the supervision of Pait, his coaching staff, current Knight players and past stars – the most notable being D.J. Mason who was a standout at Campbell University and has played professionally in other countries.
The campers also competed in free throw, speed dribbling, hot shot, and 1-on-1 competitions. The participants were divided by age into College (the youngest), International and Pro (the oldest) Divisions. There were scrimmages for each age group at the end of each day.
At the end of camp Thursday, all the campers participated in a skills demonstration for their parents, friends and family members. Awards for the event winners were also presented.
Pait shared with the crowd that he hoped to expand Lil’ Knights to 150 participants next year and possibly use Dublin gym as a 2nd site. A Lil Knights winter league is also conducted by Pait and his staff in January and February.
