LUMBERTON – Quarterback Raymond Cummings threw touchdown passes of 13 and 69 yards Wednesday night to lead Purnell Swett to a 21-0 football scrimmage victory over West Bladen in the Lumberton Football Jamboree.
An early Knight fumble at their own 12-yard line set up the other Swett touchdown as 230-pound Darius Bethea bulled into the end zone from a yard out.
“That is a big football team,” said West Coach Stanley Williams about the Rams. “Their O-line, their front seven. They are huge.”
Williams continued, “We missed some tackles, and we need to clean that up. We have put in a new offense and we have to stitch some things up there too. With 23 players we knew attrition could be a factor, and we have to get stronger.”
Quarterback Hunter Hester completed 3 of 7 passes for 20 yards. All 3 receptions were by Hezekiah Adams. Messyah Whitted rushed 3 times for 23 yards.
The Knights will close out their scrimmage schedule Friday night at Clinton against Hobbton.
Lumberton JV 8, West Bladen JV 0
Lumberton outscored the West Bladen jayvees 8-0 in the opening scrimmage of the evening. A 33-yard drive following a Knight fumble produced the game’s only touchdown. A high snap led to a safety for the other Pirate points.
“I was really impressed with the JV defense” said Williams. “It was great to see them play against someone wearing a different color jersey. We have a ton of freshmen, and I am very pleased with the jayvees.”
Omarion Brown, Warren Way, Ahmarie White and Robert McKoy all turned in key defensive plays for the Knights. Way had a sack, and McKoy batted down a pass at the line.
West Bladen quarterback Brady Marlowe completed 2 of 3 passes for 27 yards including a 19-yarder to Cayden Moore and an 8-yarder to Keon Whittington.
