CLARKTON – Jerod Smith pitched a 1-hitter and struck out 13 batters Monday to lead Clarkton School of Discovery to an 8-2 Waccamaw Middle School Conference baseball victory over Elizabethtown.

Coach Robert Mazur’s Blue Devils improved to 1-1 in Division A play and 3-1 overall. The Blue Devils are slated to host East Columbus Thursday. Elizabethtown is 0-1 in Division AA action and 0-3 overall and is scheduled to entertain Whiteville Central Thursday.

Owen Hall was hit by a pitch to begin the Clarkton 1st inning. Jerod Smith beat out an infield hit, and Prince Powell was hit by a pitch. An error aided the CSD cause, and Hall and Prince Powell scored runs for a 2-0 lead. Isaiah Atkins was hit by a pitch in the 2nd inning, and Hall and Omar Powell drew walks. Atkins scored to pad the lead to 3-0.

Cayden Morton reached base on an error, Ryne Priest walked, and Lyric Lawson smacked a single to start the Blue Devils’ 5-run 3rd inning. Hall belted a single, Omar Powell walked, and Jerod Smith blasted a triple that cleaned the bases. Morton, Priest, Lawson, Hall and Omar Powell all scored as the lead grew to 8-0.

Trey Wilson and Chandler Wall drew walks in the Elizabethtown 4th inning and Wilson scored the 1st Cougar run on a wild pitch. Jayden Byrd smashed a single and scored a 5th inning Cougar run on an error.

Jerod Smith batted 2-for-3 with a triple to lead the Clarkton hitters. Zahmarion Pone doubled and scored the final CSD run on an error. Lawson and Hall connected for 1 hit each. Hall scored 2 runs. Omar Powell, Prince Powell, Morton, Priest, Lawson and Atkins scored 1 run each.
