TAR HEEL — Carnell Lewis and Cedrick McKiver combined to score 27 points and Tar Heel scored the first 11 points Thursday in rolling to a 40-18 boys’ basketball victory against Clarkton School of Discovery.

The game was moved to the new Tar Heel gym because the Clarkton gym does not have heat. Clarkton was considered the home team.

Lewis scored 10 of his game-high 17 points in the second half as the Panthers pulled away in the second half after opening a 20-11 advantage at the intermission. McKiver finished with 10 points.

Omar Powell led the Blue Devils with eight points, which included a pair of 3-point field goals.

A pair of baskets by Demarious Guions, 3-pointer by Jahari Walker and buckets by Lewis and McKiver staked Tar Heel to an 11-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Powell’s first 3-pointer near the end of the first quarter and his bucket to open the second quarter pulled Clarkton within 13-7. However, Tar Heel countered with baskets by Guions and Lewis for a 17-7 lead.

Clarkton never came closer than 7 points in the second half. It came on a basket by ShyRon Thompson that made it 20-13.

Tar Heel outscored the Blue Devils 10-4 in the remainder of the third quarter with Lewis netting a pair of baskets and two free throws.

The Panthers scored the final 10 points of the game.

It was the season-opening game for Tar Heel. The Panthers are scheduled to host Bladenboro on Tuesday.

Clarkton is 0-2 in Waccamaw Conference play and 0-1 in Division A. The Blue Devils are slated to play at Nakina on Tuesday.
