BLADENBORO – East Columbus scored with 14 seconds left in regulation play to send their game with Bladenboro to overtime then went on to post a 34-28 victory in Waccamaw Middle School Conference football action.

“Missed tackles,” said Bulldog Coach Tim Benton. “We had their kid in the backfield but didn’t wrap up and he scored.” The Hawks then had to score a 2-point conversion to tie the game 28-28.

A dropped pass at the goalline ended Bladenboro’s overtime possession, and the Hawks used 3 plays to score the winning touchdown.

The Bulldogs opened the game with a drive that ended with Sincere McKinley’s 5-yard touchdown run. East Columbus rallied to take a 14-6 lead, before Bladenboro’s Kendell Lesane broke loose for a 45-yard touchdown run. Lesane ran the 2-point conversion to knot the score 14-14 at halftime.

The Hawks returned the 2nd-half kickoff for a touchdown and took a 20-14 lead. Ashton Davis capped a Bladenboro drive with a 2-yard run for the tying touchdown.

With 5 minutes left in the game, Lesane popped free again and dashed 30 yards for a go-ahead touchdown. Lesane bulled into the end zone for the conversion and a 28-20 Bulldog lead.

Benton praised the play of Andrew Wren who directed the first Bladenboro scoring drive in his first time at quarterback. “Andrew also did a solid job on defense and made a couple of big plays,” said Benton.

The Bulldogs, now 1-3, will host Whiteville Central Tuesday night.
