ELIZABETHTOWN – Javonte Matthews scored 2 touchdowns to lead Elizabethtown’s Cougars to a 40-8 Bladen Five Middle School Conference football victory over Tar Heel Tuesday night.
Timothy McLean flew around the left corner and raced 45 yards for a first quarter Elizabethtown touchdown. Matthews ran for the 2-point touchdown and an 8-0 Cougar lead.
In the second quarter Javonte Powell dashed around left end on an 18-yard touchdown run. Chase Starkloff bolted into the end zone for the 2-point conversion.
Tar Heel battled back with a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to pull within 16-8 at halftime.
Matthew scooted around right end on a 21-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Quarterback Raymond Autry kept the ball and crossed the goalline on the 2-point conversion run that grew the Cougar lead to 24-8.
Matthews raced 28 yards for his second touchdown in the fourth period. Autry carried the ball on the 2-point conversion run that stretched the lead to 32-8.
Korey Smith darted 19 yards for the final Cougar touchdown. Ahmad Powell tacked on the final 2-point conversion run.
“Tar Heel played us tough in the first half,” said Elizabethtown Coach Ricky Whitaker. “We made some adjustments at halftime and pulled away.”
The Cougars, now 2-0, will host 2-0 Clarkton School of Discovery Tuesday night.
