Patience Ward poured in 22 points to lead Elizabethtown to a 24-18 Bladen Five Middle School victory over visiting Tar Heel Tuesday in the seaon-opening game for both teams.

A pair of baskets by Ward and another bucket by Shanell McMillian edged the Lady Cougars in front 6-5 at the first quarter break. Claudia Cuc-Reyes drained a 3-point shot, and Shelby Pharr added a field goal in the period to keep Tar Heel close.

Ward connected for two more baskets in the second period to stretch the Lady Cougar lead to 10-6 at halftime. The Lady Panthers managed only a Cuc-Reyes free throw in the period.

Tar Heel rallied in the third quarter as Cuc-Reyes and Pharr threw in two baskets each. However Ward tossed in a trio of field goals to keep Elizabethtown on top 16-14 at the quarter break.

Ward lit up the scoreboard with 4 fourth quarter baskets that pulled out the win for the Lady Cougars. Cuc-Reyes pumped in two more buckets for Tar Heel to finish with a team-high 12 points. Pharr totaled 6 points.
