HALLSBORO – East Columbus rallied from a 9-6 deficit for a 12-9 Waccamaw Middle School Conference softball victory over Elizabethtown Tuesday.

The Lady Cougars jumped in front with a 4-run, 1st inning. Laila Smith and Ariel Cromartie both reached base to start the game, and Niyah Wooten knocked in both of them with a single. Iveonna Ward was hit by a pitch, and Hailey Bennett and Bri Wuergler drew walks to force home Wooten. Waddy Franzeo’s ground ball brought in Ward.

The Lady Hawks tied the score with 4 runs in the home half of the first, but Elizabethtown edged ahead with a run in the second inning. Smith and Mary Frances Sutton drew walks, and Wooten’s ground ball plated Smith for a 5-4 lead. East Columbus scored twice in the home half to take a 6-5 lead.

Bennett, Wuergler, Franzeo, Destiny Gore and Smith drew consecutive walks to begin the Elizabethtown 3rd inning. Bennett and Wuergler scored. Sutton was hit by a pitch to force home Gore, and Smith dashed home with another run as the Lady Cougar lead grew to 9-6.

East Columbus tied the game with 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning then scored 3 more runs in the 5th inning to go back on top.

Wooten singled, scored a run and drove in 3 runs for the Lady Cougars. Smith walked twice, scored 3 runs and drove in a run. Wuergler walked twice, scored a run and drove in a run. Bennett walked twice and scored a run.

Gore walked, scored a run and drove in a run. Ward was hit by a pitch, walked and scored a run. Cromartie walked, drove in a run and scored a run. Sutton walked, was hit by a pitch and drove in a run. In the circle, Sutton pitched a complete game and struck out 5 batters.

The Lady Cougars completed their season. “It was our last game, but we had a fun season,” said Coach Jessica Eason.
