LAKE WACCAMAW — East Columbus scored 8 runs in the 1st inning and rode the 5-hit pitching of freshman Gracie Coyle to a 12-2 Waccamaw Conference softball victory over East Bladen Thursday.

East Bladen, now 0-4 in league play and 1-4 overall, will travel to Pender Monday night. East Columbus improved to 2-0 in Waccamaw action and 5-1 overall. The Lady Gators will host South Columbus Monday night.

Two errors, 5 walks and 3 hits highlighted by Coyle’s 2-run double produced the 8 Lady Gator runs in the 1st.

Junior Martha Simmons scorched a single to right field to start the Lady Eagle 3rd inning. Sophomore Niyah Wooten pounded a double to center field that scored Simmons. Sophomore Jenna Brice reached base on an error, and Wooten scored on another error to trim the margin to 8-2.

Freshman Tatum Allen batted 2-for-2 with a double to lead the East Bladen hitters. Wooten slammed the run-scoring double and scored a run. Simmons, and junior Mollie Tolar belted singles, and Simmons scored a run.

Wooten pitched for the Lady Eagles and allowed 12 runs – 3 earned – on 7 hits and 6 walks while striking out 2. Four errors also contributed to the 9 unearned runs.

Coyle pitched all 5 innings for East Columbus allowing 2 runs – 1 earned – on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4.

Lady Gator freshman Ryleigh Owens batted 2-for-2 with a run batted in and 2 runs scored. Sophomore Kamora Bryant slugged a 2-run homer in the 4th inning and scored twice. Coyle had the 2-run double and scored a run. Sophomore Jenna King doubled and scored twice. Freshman Skylah Collins singled and had 2 RBIs.
