NAKINA — Tar Heel’s Panthers defeated Williams Township 46-38 Monday night to claim the Waccamaw Middle School Conference’s ‘A’ Division boys basketball championship.

Coach Ken Cross’ Panthers posted a perfect 4-0 record in ‘A’ Division play and are 8-1 overall. The Panthers travel to Elizabethtown Tuesday night. Williams dropped to 2-2 in division play and 4-7 overall but could have tied for the division title with a victory Monday.

Carnell Lewis nailed a trio of 3-point shots and led the Panther scoring with 19 points. Levi-Velasco-Garcia bombed in four 3-point shots for his 12 points, and Cedrick McKiver buried a 3-ball and also reached double figures with 10 points. Demarious Guions added 4 points.

Nathan Edwards poured in 22 points for the Aggies, and teammate Montorius Vereen totaled 8 points.

The Panthers jumped in front 12-8 in the opening quarter then pulled away with a 12-4 2nd period spurt that opened up a 24-12 halftime lead. Williams trimmed the margin to 33-26 at the 3rd quarter break but couldn’t catch the Panthers.

The game was played at Nakina Middle School because the floor at Williams Township is unplayable.
