thoughts while shavingLooking back at 2023 for a moment … some of the weather related highlights for our area … lest we forget…

Heat wave in February … High temps in the 80s February 23rd, lows in the mid 70s.

We had severe thunderstorms around April 22 … 1.91 inches of rain recorded at Bladen Lakes State Forest, according to the National Weather Service…

A Flash Flood mid-May produced nearly 10 inches of rain in Bellville and over 6 inches in Leland…

Mid-June … Green Swamp wildfire … over 15,000 acres burned…

A Flash Flood in the Whiteville area July 30-31 producing heavy flooding in Whiteville, up to six inches in some locations…

Mid-August, a heatwave … temps locally reached into the mid 90 range … Heat index over 110 … for a short time … 115 in Lumberton…

And, a Fall drought lasted from October to early December … Bladen was listed in a ‘severe drought’ category…

Our annual average high temp for 2023 was near 76 … highest in July (92+) and lowest was near 61 degrees in January and December … and for the record, no measurable sleet or snow. Average maximum wind gusts were recorded in mid to upper 40s mph in May. All stats courtesy of the NWS…

Yesterday’s high was 56 degrees…

Forecast for today … (Friday) … A chance of showers before 4 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5 p.m. High temp near 69. Windy … gusts as high as 23 mph and a 60% chance of precipitation.

Tonight … Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1 a.m. Low around 47 … Breezy, gusts as high as 30 mph, and a 50% chance of rain.

Sunny Saturday with a high near 56 and windy, gusts near 31 mph … Sunny Sunday (Church Day) … high near 57.

We are now ‘weathered up’…
