SHALLOTTE – Sophmore Gracie Griffin and freshman Anna Frazier combined to pitch a 2-hitter and strikeout 12 batters as West Brunswick defeated East Bladen 7-0 Monday in the opening round of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational Softball Tournament.
Griffin pitched the first six innings and allowed 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out ten. Frazier pitched the seventh inning and issued one walk while striking out two.
Junior Peyton Daniels drove in a run with a first inning single as the Lady Trojans built a 2-0 lead then grounded a single to left field that plated two more runs in the fourth.
Daniels slugged a 2-run homer in the sixth inning as the Lady Trojan lead grew to 7-0. Daniels finished 3-3 at the plate with the home run and 5 runs batted in. Teammate Isabel Smeltzer batted 2-3 with a double, and Hailey Wilson was 2-4.
Sophmore Kayleigh Raynor and senior Anna Kate White connected for one hit each for East Bladen. Raynor pitched a complete game for the Lady Eagles.
East Bladen will play Richmond County at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a second round game.
