AUGUSTA, GA – The Peach Belt Conference released its’ 2017 All-Conference pre-season softball team Tuesday and Bladenboro native and UNC-Pembroke star Abbey Walters was named to the first team.

The team was determined by a vote of the league’s head softball coaches, and UNC-Pembroke and Armstrong State both placed 3 players on the 11-player squad.

Walters was selected to the pre-season team as a utility player since she splits time between the outfield and pitcher. The West Bladen grad was a first team All-Peach Belt Conference outfielder in 2016.

Walters batted .396 with 8 home runs and 42 runs batted in in 2016 and was ranked in the league’s top five in hits, doubles, triples  and stolen bases. In the circle the senior righthander posted an 8-5 record with a 2.71 Earned Run Average. Walters pitched 5 complete games, including one shutout and struck out 48 in 82.2 innings.

Other UNC-Pembroke selections to the team were junior shortstop Taylor Gerhart and junior thirdbaseman Jamie Johnson. The Lady Braves open the 2017 season on Friday, February 3rd at 10 a.m. in the UNC-Pembroke Invitational against Kutztown.
