The Major League Baseball season opening on April Fools’ Day seems so appropriate. MLB seems to enjoy pranking us with long games, limited action and constant labor issues.

Often, the game is a glorified version of home run derby. Batters striking out are just an accepted part of the game now. And speaking of strikes, there’s always talk of a strike or a lockout as players and owners try to reach a labor agreement.

But when all is said and done, it’s still the best sport to follow because of the ups and downs during the long grind of the 162-game season. In what other sports can you win 10 or 12 games in a row and still finish last or lose 10 or 12 games in a row and still finish first.

So, let’s play ball, watch and enjoy the season as the Rays beat the Braves in the World Series. Hey, it’s opening day. I can pick the two teams I follow to meet in the World Series.

Order of finish:

AL East: Yankees, Rays, Blue Jays, Red Sox, Orioles

AL Central: Twins, White Sox, Indians, Royals, Tigers

AL West: Athletics, Astros, Angels, Rangers, Mariners

NL East: Braves, Mets, Nationals, Phillies, Marlins

NL Central: Cardinals, Brewers, Reds, Cubs, Pirates

NL West: Dodgers, Padres, Diamondbacks, Giants, Rockies

Let the grind begin!
