RED SPRINGS – West Bladen was held to only one point in the final quarter as Red Springs pulled out a 27-19 Three Rivers Conference girls basketball victory Friday night.

Senior Jalexis Bratcher drained a 3-point shot and 2 free throws as the Lady Red Devils stretched a 19-18 lead to 24-18, before junior Lexie Corrothers sank a free throw for West Bladen with 2 minutes left. A trio of Taylynn Atkinson free throws sealed the verdict.

Corrothers pumped in a game-high 15 points for the Lady Knights, and senior Carley Dawson added 4 points. Atkinson led Red Springs with 11 points, and Bratcher finished with 9 points.

Atkinson threw in 2 baskets in the first quarter to lead Red Springs to an early 8-2 lead. Corrothers made 2 free throws for the Lady Knight points.

Two more Atkinson baskets padded the lead to 16-7 at halftime. Corrothers and Dawson popped in baskets, and Corrothers tacked on a free throw for West.

Corrothers fired in a trio of baskets, and Dawson worked inside for another as the Lady Knights trimmed the Red Springs lead to 19-15. Corrothers beat the third quarter buzzer with a 3-point shot that sliced the margin to 19-18 at the quarter break.

“We couldn’t get into any rhythm in the first half, “ said West Bladen Coach Brian McCleney. “We played well in the third quarter but came up short. No time to pout. Got to get ready for next week.”

The Lady Knights, now 8-2 in the league and 11-4 overall, will host East Columbus Friday night.
