Caleb Sholar pitched a two-hit shutout as the West Bladen junior varsity baseball team defeated East Bladen 10-0 on Thursday afternoon in a Four County 1A/2A Conference game.
Sholar, a sophomore right-hander, struck out five and walked six in five innings. The game was stopped after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule. Sholar allowed a second-inning single to Caleb Strait and a third-inning single to Devon Stocks. The Knights defense didn’t commit an error and ended the game by turning a double play.
West Bladen catcher Brandon Carson had a single, double and triple in three at-bats and drove in four runs to lead the offense. Jonathan Robinson also went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Ray Jones had a pair of singles and pair of runs batted in. Colby Smith and Hunter Pait each had a hit. Donald McCullum walked twice, was hit by a pitch and scored three runs, including one on a steal of home in the fourth inning.
West Bladen improved to 5-6 in conference games and 9-7 overall. The Knights are scheduled to close their season Saturday at home against Pender.
East Bladen finished its season 5-8 in the conference and 8-10-1 overall.
West Bladen scored once in the first inning when McCullum walked, stole second and scored on Carson’s double.
The Knights added four runs in the second. Robinson led off with a double and scored on Jones’ single to center. Jones scored on a ground out by Trey Storms. Smith followed with a single and McCullum walked, and both scored on Carson’s triple.
West Bladen made it 6-0 in the third inning. After an out, Robinson singled and moved to second on a fielding error. Jones followed with run-producing single to left-center.
The Knights scored their final four runs in the fourth inning. Smith opened the inning with a walk and McCullum was hit by a pitch. Carson’s single drove in Smith. McCullum then stole home. Pait singled. Robinson capped the rally with a two-run single.
