CLARKTON – Nayshaun Jones scored the winning touchdown in the final minute as Clarkton School of Discovery rallied for a 32-28 Waccamaw Middle School Conference football victory over West Columbus Tuesday night.

West Columbus scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass with less than 2 minutes remaining to take a 28-24 lead. The Blue Devils recovered West Columbus’ onside kick attempt, and a late hit penalty moved the ball to the 35 yard line.

On the next play, Jones took the handoff on the end around and scooted 35 yards for the touchdown. Quarterback Keyshawn Kemp ran the 2-point conversion for a 32-28 Blue Devil lead.

West Columbus had time left to run only 2 plays, before time ran out.

Semaj McRae dashed 10 yards for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead on Clarkton’s 1st possession of the game. Kemp kept the ball and carried 5 yards for a 2nd quarter Blue Devil touchdown. Kemp also ran the 2-point conversion to boost the lead to 14-0.

The Blue Devil defense tacked on a safety to stretch the halftime lead to 16-0.

West scored on their initial possession of the 2nd half then scooped up a Clarkton fumble and returned the ball 40 yards for a touchdown that trimmed the Blue Devil lead to 16-14 after the conversion.

The visitors recovered their onside kick and drove for a go-ahead touchdown that came on a 25-yard run and vaulted WC on top 22-16.

Clarkton answered on their 1st possession of the final period. Dashon Campbell raced 20 yards around right end for the touchdown, and Kemp added another conversion run that put the Blue Devils in front 24-22.

It was the season opener for Coach Robert Mazur’s Blue Devils who will travel to Elizabethtown next Tuesday.
