Bladen County VolleyballWhiteville defeated visiting East Bladen 3-0 Wednesday night in non-conference volleyball action by game scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-21.

Junior Lexie Mendell knocked in a kill for the first Lady Eagle point and later added a service point, but Whiteville built an 11-5 lead in the first game.

Junior Anna Grace Long flipped a return winner over the net to win the serve for sophomore Hannah DeVane who rallied East to within 11-8 with a trio of service points.

Seniors Lacey Suggs and Claire Campbell sandwiched service points around a DeVane kill that kept the Lady Eagles within 17-14. Suggs drilled in a back-row kill, and DeVane slammed in a kill and a service point to narrow the gap to 19-17.

Suggs hammered in a kill to win a service point for senior Miller Heustess, and Mendell smacked in a winner from the back row that won another Heustess service point and trimmed the margin to 20-19.

The Lady Wolfpack answered with a 5-1 spurt to take the game.

Suggs smashed an ace to begin the second game, and Mendell kept East Bladen on top 3-2 with a pair of service points. DeVane spiked in a winner and added a service point to halt a 7-3 Whiteville run.

Suggs blistered the court with a kill, and Long fired in an ace to pull the Lady Eagles to within 13-10.

Whiteville pushed the lead back to 22-13, but Mendell scored on a block and cracked a service winner. Long swatted in a kill, and DeVane delivered an ace and another service point that whittled the lead to 23-18.

Suggs opened the third game with another ace, and Mendell tipped in a winner and added a service point to keep East within 6-5. However a 12-3 run opened up an 18-8 Lady Wolfpack lead.

Suggs reeled off 5 straight service points that started with an ace to slice the margin to 18-14.

Whiteville still led 22-15, when Campbell tapped in a winner to ignite a run of 5 straight service points by Mendell that included an ace and trimmed the Lady Wolfpack lead to 22-21.

Whiteville responded with three straight points to end the match.

Mendell and Suggs topped the East Bladen scoring. Mendell totaled 10 service points, 4 aces and a kill. Suggs finished with 8 service points, 3 aces and 4 kills.

DeVane followed with 6 service points, 4 kills and an ace. Heustess was credited with 10 assists and 2 service points. Long added a service point, an ace and a kill.

Campbell contributed a service point and a kill, and senior Abby Ward had an assist.

Coach Jennifer Hair’s Lady Eagles, now 1-1, will host East Columbus Monday.
