ELIZABETHTOWN – Elizabethtown moved into first place in the Bladen Five Middle School Conference football standings Tuesday night with a 14-6 victory over Clarkton School of Discovery.

After a scoreless first quarter, Javonte Powell charged off left tackle, broke a pair of tackles and raced 45 yards for a Cougar touchdown. Chase Starkloff carried into the end zone for the 2-point conversion and an 8-0 Elizabethtown lead.

Timothy McLean bolted 50 yards for another Cougar touchdown in the third quarter that padded the lead to 14-0.

Samaj Dove raced 40 yards for the Blue Devil touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils regained possession on a turnover but couldn’t capitalize in the closing minutes.

“It was a tough defensive game by both teams,” said Elizabethtown Coach Rick Whitaker. “We got some good breaks that helped us.”

The Cougars, now 3-0, will host Bladenboro Tuesday, while Clarkton, now 2-1, will play at Tar Heel.
